Analog Sunset - NOT!!!!!
You may have heard that analog HD video is going to be outlawed, that Component Analog Video on Cable and Satellite receivers may go dark in the near future. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE!!! The term "Analog Sunset" appears and is described in Exhibit E, part 2, section 2.2.2 of the final AACS Adopter Agreement of June 2009, AACS (Advanced Access Content System) is a reference that Blu-Ray manufactures must follow in order to be licensed by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) as well as other content providers. AACS is NOT a law enforcement agency or associated with government in any way, it is essentially a private trade group. This document goes on to specify that ONLY Blu-Ray players must limit their Analog outputs to 480i or be turned off entirely depending on if the disk has content protection enabled. The document does not specify cable or satellite box's to be crippled in any way- IE: NO ANALOG BLOCKING of Satellite, Cable or off-air broadcasts.
The analog outputs of cable or satellite TV set-top boxes, including receivers or DVRs, have been widely reported to be associated with the analog sunset. In Fact in the United States, the FCC has a regulation, 47 CFR 76.1903, that explicitly prohibits the disabling of analog outputs on cable and satellite set-top boxes.
So basically analog HD outputs may disappear from Blu-ray players but NOT anything else, to make up for this possibility there are a slew of HDMI to ANALOG converters on the market that can even handle the HDCP if enabled. DTV, Dish & Cable will NOT be effected with only the exception being VOD (Video On Demand) which may allow analog to be switched off or limited to 480i ONLY IF content is to be delivered before a disc is available. After a disc has been released the analog outputs must be switched back on.
Bottom line, Don't worry about installing an analog system, sports and everyday programs will NOT be effected. ReSwitch's re-certified analog matrix switcher systems will save you tens of thousands of dollars over digital HDMI and provide virtually identical picture quality. Extron electronics (a large A/V systems manufacture) says it all in this document “Analog Sunset” Demystified. Please click the link and read more on the issue, they did a wonderful job of further clarifying the situation.
